ตะกรุด (Takrut)
Takrut (amulet)
A popular amulet with a long history in Thailand. It is made by inscribing sacred symbols and incantations onto a metal plate (gold, silver, copper, lead) or natural material (bamboo, animal hide), then rolling it into a cylindrical shape.
Main Beliefs/Spiritual Benefits: All-encompassing, depending on the specific incantation. Examples include:
Invincibility/Protection: Protection from danger, bulletproof, and invulnerable to stabbings.
Attractiveness/Charm: Successful business dealings and being well-liked by others.
Protection: Protection against ghosts, black magic, and other evil spirits.
Distinguishing Features: A small metal or material rod, often wrapped in rope or covered in plastic for easy carrying. Commonly worn around the waist, around the neck, or kept in a locket.
Practice/Worship:
Carrying: Generally, it should be carried at all times. Invincibility takruts are often worn around the waist. However, for amulets related to loving-kindness or those from high-ranking masters, it is customary to wear them around the neck or carry them in a shirt/pants pocket (depending on the regulations of that particular school/master).
Caution: Do not bring them into immoral places or vice-ridden areas. Also, avoid passing them under clotheslines or in very low places (especially high-level amulets).
